Recharging the batteries

Everybody needs a re- charge of their batteries. I'm in Poland visiting family and just catching up. I always pack a camera for my trips as well as a few flashguns. I unwind by taking pictures and if I can Ski as well, that's a bonus. Below are pictures from the Lower Silesia area of Poland. The main town is Swidnica.

A half hour drive south brings us to our favourite place called Sowa Grapia in Rzecka.

. Its a small hotel run by Witek and Magda, Witek is my Wife's cousin. They work really hard to make it work and it shows!. Having spent a winter holiday and New Years eve in the hotel, I can thoroughly recommend it for a winter and summer breaks. The mountains are breathtaking. Karol is their Son who features below. The weather has been good this season and despite -18 temperatures, the snow has fallen and there is good skiing to be had. Another great event this week, was my Mother In Law's 75th Birthday. We have had a pretty rough few months as a family, so it was nice to have a meal and smile. Enjoy the pictures. Poland is a real fantastic place.

A photographer friend commented on a few wedding shows i showed him, on how feature rich Portsmouth is. It inspired me to get this out morning with two best friends :) Roxi my dog and my trusty Samsung SLR. It was meant to be snowing today ...ermm . A lovely 2 hour walk and these pictures made for a relaxing morning. Some of the styles you see here are called contre jour , which is french for "against daylight". In some cases I use a off camera flash fill to get the best out of the foreground. Enjoy the images .

Leigh and Alex Pre Wedding shoot in Old Portsmouth

The first pre wedding shoot of the year, and what a great start with Leigh and Alex. They are getting married in the summer at my favourite venue, The Old Thorns Country Hotel in Liphook. We met early to beat the crowds and had the bonus of a low tide, so we headed to the base of the Round Tower in Portsmouth. Lilly was a little hesitant, but got in the mood at the end. Leigh and Alex are absolute naturals in front of the camera as the pictures below show. Check back in the Summer for images of the their wedding day.

Its the closing round of the Professional Photographer of the year awards 2011. I like entering this competition, as its based on the 5 judges decision and not public or paid voting. I won the travel title last year and commended in the wedding section.I never have subscribed to the concept of the winner being chosen by the amount of friends they can get to vote for an image. You cheat yourself in this way. I have entered my best this year and fingers crossed. Very pleased to get this published and commented on. Reportage wedding photography is very competitive. This was shot at the Queens Hotel in the summer from the Rugby based Steve and Dawn's wedding day. It was just smiles all day , and this was the perfect one. Happy New Year

Our Miracle Week

Christmas is always a time to be with family. This week has been terrible for us. My father in law Marian had a cardiac arrest on Monday. He was revived at home and again in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. His situation was critical for most of Monday. Doctors fought all day Tuesday to keep him alive and finally operated on Wednesday to fit a pacemaker to get his heart working. The operation was a great success and Marian was at home on Friday. Today on Christmas Eve, through the fantastic technology of Skype, we were able to break holy bread in Poland and Portsmouth and give thanks. The thanks and praise go to the medics in Swidnica who got to Marian so fast to be able to revive him, and then to the heart specialists and nurses who used their skill and professionalism to extend the life of this fantastic man and enable him to share the most precious time with us. I have taken 1000's of pictures, but this is the best one of Father and Daughter smiling and wishing Merry Xmas to each other. God Bless .

Sometime ago I was approached by a second year photography student at Portsmouth University to ask if would give a presentation on photography for their end of year exhibition. I agreed, as I have had numerous students assist on shoots and they have been great . The talk was based on some general ideas on how to start out , dealing with kit, studios, location and finished off with a short intro in the pressures of wedding photography. I then spent about three hours putting it together, using time I would normally use for spending with my long suffering family. In short , I put a lot of work into it. I even contacted some of the more popular blogs that deal with culture and the arts for a plug, for the exhibition rather than my talk. The website advertising the show also mentioned mine and other guest speakers name. So comes Thursday, the day before I was asked to present, no news on the timing, so I decided to email the organiser who contacted me in the first place. The response was

" I'm really sorry, not professional on my part at all that i didn't get to tell you my course mates decided we're not having guest speakers anymore because we dont have time .You're morethan welcomed to come
and see it though. Im verry sorry if you prepared something i didnt know myself until a few days ago" ( sic)

Those that know me, know that I am very laid back and helpful to almost anybody. Normally I would let it go, after all, manners and a modicum of respect is very hard to find these days. This was a module for their course which involved organising and funding an exhibition and all the work that is involved with that. I think that , if they had treated all the other guest speakers the same, they should be marked down considerably.

There is one way to get ahead in life, and that is being courteous and respectful to other people, especially if they doing something on their dime and time. The consequences of their actions, especially among portsmouth photographers, who are approached from students for work experience or time on a shoot will be negative . That is a real shame.

Guava Jelly

Guava Jelly are a local Portsmouth band. Maria and Nick play beautiful music. Check out their lastest EP here. We met this weekend to take some images at the New Theatre Royal in Portsmouth. Working around an orchestra rehearsal and a lighting programme, we had a great time capturing the mood of their music and personalities. I enjoyed the session. Not knowing either of them, or really knowing the venue it was a pleasing challenge to get it right. Check out Guava Jelly's facebook page to get their gig dates

Jo and Andy got married on one of the best days in November. The service was at the wonderful Porstmouth Registry Office. I should have know what to expect, when the best man presented the rings ...made of Jelly to the registrar! After the vows we had some time in the gardens and then headed to Old Portsmouth for some pictures. The reception was at the Hilton in Portsmouth. The theme of Mr Potato Head was very much on the cards for the whole evening and what a laugh that turned out to be ! Emma and Paul got married at New Place Hotel near Wickham on Saturday. It was a perfect day in every sense As the whole wedding took place in one place, it was very relaxed and friendly. I love loads of children at weddings, they make it such a family event and it makes for some great moments. The service was fantastic with two lovely speeches. Afterwards we used some of fabulous locations round the hotel for photographs and then headed on to a lovely wedding breakfast. After the meal we set up some lights and got everybody on the couch for pictures galore. Little Harry did his best to avoid the camera most of the day, but we got him on the couch later. After winning the Travel Photographer crown last year and getting into the wedding category, I am determined to publish some of my new work into the Professional Photographer of the Year award for 2011. It has been really satisfying to be in three consecutive months and two occasions before See below. The first is of Charlotte Thomson on a boat in Eastney and the second of Finley shot in the studio.The two images on the third image down, are from the competition last year.
The Portsmouth News picked up on it and kindly showcased some of my travel images. The two other images show Kinga in a wedding dress in Eastney and also a wedding image from a wedding in Poland last year. I am really thrilled to get my work published in such a prestigious magazine.

It has been a mixed week. I bumped into a friend on the tube in London. A real chance meeting. She reminded me of the paintings I did for her in Copenhagen about 12 years ao and how she still has them. I must have stopped painting at least 6 years ago and have no desire to start again.

I then attended a quick presentation by one of the world's best wedding photographers in London. I have admired his work and vision for many years. The talk was humoured and honest as well as being informative. The two events for different reasons, pressed the reset button on my direction in photography and the way I see it as an art.

Helen made me realise that my painting has now been taken over by landscapes and the use of HDR techniques to enhance what I see. Jeff Ascough made realise that "those moments" in a wedding day are the items to capture and treasure.

The week finally finished with the birth of Julia to Monica and Bartek. Bartek is my wife's nephew and I have know him since he was three. I have photographed him all through life, and also had the pleasure of photographing their relationship- engagement, wedding and pregnancy and soon their little girl.

This morning, I resumed my weekly beachfront walks for the winter. There is nothing better to blow the cobwebs and marvel at what nature throws at us. Enjoy

Dawn and Steve travelled down from Rugby, to be wed at the Queen's Hotel in Southsea. It was a great day, as all those attended will agree. Dawn looked stunning and Steve was just smiling all day . After a very loving and emotional service, drinks were served on the lawn to a the tunes of a traditional band. We had a drive round Portsmouth to take some pictures, calling off at the Ice cream van, Mr Zippo's Circus and the Rotunda at Spice Island, even stopping to pose with a canine friend! After a lovely meal, drinks and photographs on the lawns, followed by a suprise appearance ( see pictures below). All good fun!. To many, this was the Wedding of the Year. Jim and Simone are such a lovely couple and I am honoured to be counted as a friend . Simone worked on The Warrior a few years ago so there was only one place the Wedding venue could be. The Service and Reception were held on board. After a wonderful, laid back service on the Quarter deck, we then had drinks and pictures on deck, before having a superb Wedding Breakfast down below. After some tear inducing speeches, the first dance was a surprise to all, with a fantastic number expertly danced out by Mr and Mrs Cain. A great night of dancing to a live band and lots of portrait taking until we had to disembark late hundred hours. Congratulations Simone and Jim, you make a beautiful couple. Rain did not stop play, as Claire and Eddie got married at the newly opened Sacred Heart Church in Waterlooville. It was the first time a wedding had been conducted in the Church, and it was fitting to see the Church full of the Bride and Groom's guests. A lovely service was followed by a fantastic reception at the Havant Rugby Club, a place dear to Claire's and Eddie's heart. A brilliant day was had by all for sure. The thrill of being published in a magazine is fantastic, no matter how many times it happens. After meeting the Editor at the Professional Photographer Awards in March, its even more of challenge to get the images chosen in the first place to be featured on line. Jessica and Joe live in London but returned to Joe's hometown for their Wedding Day. The Civil Ceremony was held at the Royal Naval Club, followed by pictures in the Garrison Church and the Hot Walls. The reception was held at the Southsea Leisure Park. Joe was in fine form and Jessica looked absolutely stunning. Relatives and Friends jetted in from as far as Australia, USA, Myanmar and Israel. Jess and Joe and their Parents would like to extend their love and gratitude for those who came from so far for the Wedding. The service at the Royal Naval Club was lighthearted and loving and standing room only, once all the guests had arrived . The beauty of Flickr, is not only the inspiration from other photographs, but the people you meet. This is the second time that I have met up with Denise. The first time , I introduced her to using off camera flash and she has never been right since. So we met up for a drink and a shoot one evening last week in London . I had assumed that Denise knew the ladies at the table, but she had been there 5 minutes and convinced Jackie and her Aunts to follow us to our fave street to take the first picture. We are using on flash on a stand in all these images. Once Jackie and Aunts had gone, we then asked passer's by if we could take their photo. .We do send the images onto them via mail. So this is the fruits of 2 hours of fun, laughter and lovely people. London is so cool.

Another perfect day for a perfect wedding . Joanne, with her Mother and Sister and Chris's Mother and Sister had an early start at Mellors and then back to the house for a very relaxed makeup and dressing session. Meanwhile Chris was greeting guest's at John Pound's Church . The church was full and the service was just perfect. The guest's the headed to the Garrison Church for photographs and then a short walk to the Royal Naval Club for drinks and then the Wedding Breakfast. It was a great day enjoyed by everybody. Joanne looked stunning in her wedding dress and Chris's speech was simply touching. Joanne and Chris are really genuine people, and game for anything . Our shot above is taken from the top of the Club, and I'm sure , the first wedding image taken in this room. All the very best to a lovely couple.

Charlotte Thomson is Miss Portsmouth 2010 as well as being FHM's High Street Honey of 2009. As well as being gorgeous, she is a very down to earth Woman and a real pleasure to spend time and take photographs with. Charlotte got in touch a few years ago, before Miss Portsmouth and we have a shot a few sessions before( lots on this blog), but with us being busy, its taken and age to fix this shoot. We managed an hour on a blustery Sunday evening last weekend. The location was at the Hayling Ferry station, with views out to Langstone harbour. Using a 2 light set up, we shot these in about 1/2 hour. It just got too cold after that. Charlotte looks great with her new look, and after a winter of building up a business, I hope she gets back into modelling. A real star. Enjoy the images.

Katie & Lee All Saints Catherington and Old Thorns Hotel Liphook

Katie and Lee got married at All Saints Catherington and had their reception at Old Thorns Manor Hotel at Liphook. The day commenced at Katie and Lee’s house for the groom and a short trip down the road to Katie’s Mum for the bridal preparation. All very relaxed at both locations. Katie’s dress was absolutely stunning.

At the Chucrh we were greeted by harp music and Reverend Amanda Collinson, who has to take the crown of the most friendly and obliging Vicar in the County. This , coupled with a beautiful church led to a very special wedding service .

Following a few photographs in the Church grounds, the Bride and Groom headed off to the reception in the classic Bentley “ Betty”.

At Old Thorns Manor, the reception at the Hampshire suite was immaculate . The reception room was decorated beautifully and the food and service fantastic.

The scenery within the Hotel grounds is breathtaking , and with the help of Stewart and the patience of Katie and Lee, we got to take some Bride and Groom pictures in absolute heaven .

Following the cake cutting and first dance, the evening carried on with dancing and drinks on the terrace until late.

An absolutely great day, planned and presented by Katie , perfectly. It was a pleasure to be in the company of such nice people. Wishing you both of a lifetime of happiness....thanks.
